Fairlawn Green Action:
Advocacy and activism

Objective statement

Implement “the power of one” by providing a workshop to encourage LETTER WRITING by members of the Fairlawn community to government bodies on topics related to global warming.  This will be supported by a local “letter writing campaign” resource group, and followed up with a lawn party celebration and expanded to community involvement.

Status

1.  Information on how to write letters and get involved in online petitions is available.

2.  Information links on how to go "carbon neutral" have been provided.

3. Links to many online petitions and letter writing web sites were circulated to over 70 "green" members in the Fairlawn community to encourage them to add their voice to the message to politicians to stop global warming now.

3. A package of information has been prepared with web links, pamphlets and handouts on how to prepare for a campaign, how governments develop policies, and how to "say it right" to get your message across in a manner that will be successful for you.

4. We've added information on what you can do now (see below).

Note: This is a very small team in need of more people to assist with the planning and implementation. Please contact us to show your support, to assist this action, and to let us know your ideas.

Things you can do NOW!

1. Set up a distribution list of your friends, family and neighbours. Then forward Green Tip information you receive from Fairlawn (remember to send your email to yourself and use the "blind copy" or ".BCC" feature for the distribution list to preserve the privacy of the recipients.)

2. Get information from this site http://www.davidsuzuki.org/Take_Action/  and from this page on our site  Online petitions and letter-writing: Tell our government officials to step up and fight climate change! You will find information on how to:

  • send an email to the editor of a national or local newspaper
  • write a letter or phone your MP, MLA or mayor
  • pen an op-ed or phone a radio call-in show
